This exquisitely designed metal flower bouquet by Jane Hutcheson will be, "blooming beautifully from here to eternity to grow more precious with time…" This piece dates back to the 1970s from the Fleur des Siècles line of jeweled and enameled objets d'art for the Gorham Silver Company. Each arrangement is meticulously crafted taking inspiration from 17th century Vincennes porcelain flowers with each metal leaf and flower made by hand. It is an understatement to say that Mark Twain was an avid smoker. His instrument of choice was a corn-cob pipe. The corn-cob pipe is a light pipe made from a hollowed-out cob of Indian corn that gives off a sweet smell. It colors brown with use, ultimately turning black and hence is also know as "The Missouri Meerschaum." Twain never smoked a new corn-cob pipe. In his words, "I always hire a cheap man–a man who doesn't amount to much, anyhow–who would be as well–or better–dead, and let him break in the pipe for me. I get him to smoke the pipe for a couple of weeks, then put in a new stem, and continue operations as long as the pipe holds together." This particular pipe outlived Twain and based on appearances still has quite a bit of life left. It is in excellent condition, serving as a relic of its age as well as a characteristic artifact of Twain himself.

I have recently undergone a couple of those major life changing events and have been rather occupied over the last couple of months. Commodities has been neglected in that time. However, things have calmed down a bit and new listings are to follow shortly. But to get the blog up to speed, a past critic and a new one emailed me during the Polaroid Type 55 auction:

I read your blog, I prefer excitement/bidding on actual items, thank you. As expected you're already canceling bids from those duped. Wasting other's time with misleading ads, I doubt that's your intent. But like the self-indulgent who tag an overpass, forcing their work upon anyone who drives that road, this kind of thing robs the viewer of the ability to be a WILLFUL participant in the art process. What of those who do not want to participate, isn't that abuse? In the end you may excite select friends and associates, teachers, whomever you made privy to what you are up to. As for the rest, you will simply reinforce in MOST minds the notion that art is stupid, mundane, and an irritant to be avoided. No wonder the arts are under attack financially and their place questioned. FYI, I use polaroid 55..with my art background your message is lost on me because its forced + the distraction merely ads to my day's clutter. *When art has nothing to say at what point does it become meaningless?

Maybe this is more a problem of venue. This may be more successful in a different setting, perhaps a private auction where participants can willingly elect to participate. It just evokes a negative reaction in me as you have this structured currently. Especially at a time in our post-modern society where so much about the arts is being attacked in our centers of government and the courts, I think we need to be careful not to alienate. So many voices all vying to be heard, if the message has the appearance of being forced it can be enough to turn the heart and mind against it.

Washington silver quarters were minted 1932-1964 and contain 90% silver and 10% copper, unlike todays "Johnson sandwhich," that is composed predominately of copper with 8.33% nickel. The 1940 Denver mint coin was not the rarest minted of the Washington silver quarters but it is among the most difficult to find in high grades. Circulated coin, very good condition.

Does anyone read the item description? I have never purchased something on ebay with out reading the complete description first. Am I the only one that does that? The listing has the word 'photograph' or some other related term in excess of 10 times. I fear that creating any more blatant descriptions will erase the nuances I had hoped to maintain. What makes this so hard to understand? It is interesting to point out that the most misunderstood auctions were the Rollei and currently, the box of Polaroid film.

The legendary type 55 film* is the Holy Grail of films, combining an instant black and white positive print and printable negative for every shot. One box provides 20 relics-to-be–do shoot wisely. Passed expiration but stored cool, dry and dark for great results today.

Up for bid is an original drawing of a RCA Victor Theremin AR-1264. The drawing is by Erik Dalzen, and is titled "RCA Victor Theremin AR-1264 Analog Original." Ink on BFK tan, 100% archival, cotton rag paper. The drawing measures 7.5x11 inches. This drawing is one-of-a-kind. Signed and dated on the back.

The progenitor of electric musical instruments is the RCA theremin*. It's construction consists of some electronic guts enclosed in a mahogany box with two protruding antennae. The vertical antenna controls the pitch while the horizontal, looped antenna controls the volume. Play is achieved through the movement of the hands in the space surrounding the antennae. RCA produced the first commercially available theremin, the AR-1264, and tried to pawn it off as an any man, woman or child's play thing. However, owing to the fact that the theremin requires perfect pitch and a precise mastery of hand and body control, over a set of antenna lacking any fingerboard, key or fret reference, the "ease" of play proved to be otherwise. The AR-1264 was discontinued shortly after it's initial production of a few hundred units. Most of the remaining models are in the hands of elite thereminists or museums.

This beautiful, Mondrian inspired, sleeveless dress* by Yves Saint Laurent is an incredible piece of ~~art~~ fashion. Turning the modified shift dress into a canvass Saint Laurent applied Mondrian order to hide the body's shaping amid the color field grid. Leather and silk in color blocks of red and white with black trim. The dress is predominately leather except for white shoulder panel and trim on the edge of the opposing red panel, which are matte French silk. Circa 1965.

Q: why are you selling a picture listed under wedding rings. Why not under art. This is misleading. Especially if someone doesn't read every word on your description. Why mention the size of the ring and other characteristics.

A: This is part of a larger art project. The listing is in fact listed under art as well as wedding rings. One reason being, that the project is intended to be exhibited outside of an art context. Additionally, by blurring the lines between the object and the image it questions the role of photography in our culture as well as consumerism. Gandhi was the ascetic of the century (as well as Time magazine's Man of the Year in 1930 and five time Nobel Peace Prize nominee between 1937 and 1948). Of the few items he did own, his wire-rimmed glasses* were his trademark feature. They accompanied him all over the place; throughout different countries, to lots of people's houses, to prison and on trains. As The Father of the Nation Gandhi's "eyes" helped him to obtain the vision to transform India and lay the foundation for it's independence movement. Up for bid are two original drawings of an ancient Greek coin, a silver tetradrachm. The diptych is by artist, Erik Dalzen, and is titled "Bee/Stag AR Tetradrachm EF Ephesos Ionia 390 BC." India ink drawing on Pescia Grey 100% archival cotton rag paper. Each of the two drawings measure 4x4 inches. Unique. Signed and dated on the back.

This silver AR tetradrachm* features a bee on the obverse and the forepart of a stag and a palm tree on the reverse. The coin is from Ephesos, Ionia; present day Efes, Turkey. Struck circa 390-340 B.C. 15.30 grams. 27 mm in diameter. Coin in excellet shape, EF grade. The tetradrachm is one of the earliest coins, used in wide circulation throughout Greece from 510 BC to 38 BC. The monetary value of one tetradrachm, in those days, would equate to roughly a weeks wages for a skilled laborer. The tetradrachm were hand-stamped which lead to imperfect impressions and irregular shaped coins.

If you grow wheat just to get the chaff, you're crazy...but if you grow corn to get the cob you're smart. - Mark Twain

It is an understatement to say that Mark Twain was an avid smoker. His instrument of choice was a corn-cob pipe. The corn-cob pipe is a light pipe made from a hollowed-out cob of Indian corn that gives off a sweet smell. It colors brown with use, ultimately turning black and hence is also know as "The Missouri Meerschaum." Twain never smoked a new corn-cob pipe. In his words, "I always hire a cheap man–a man who doesn't amount to much, anyhow–who would be as well–or better–dead, and let him break in the pipe for me. I get him to smoke the pipe for a couple of weeks, then put in a new stem, and continue operations as long as the pipe holds together." This particular pipe outlived Twain and based on appearances still has quite a bit of life left. It is in excellent condition, serving as a relic of its age as well as a characteristic artifact of Twain himself.

This photograph features a sculpture of a tall man*. The sculpture was hand-carved in South Africa, by local artisans, from ironwood, a dark wood renown for its incredible hardness. The stylized figure is reminiscent of Alberto Giacometti's surrealist figures through the similar usage of attenuated limbs and elongation of the form. Unlike Giacometti's sculptures, however, the figure is represented in traditional tribal wear, displays a protruding belly and a pensive stance. While much of Giacometti's work, predating his surrealist figures, exhibits an 'ethnographic' style, this piece could indicate continued African influence throughout his career. Regardless of whether it did in fact influence the master, it is a beautiful piece of art.

This photograph features a pair of haunted leopard print gloves*. After purchasing the gloves from a second hand store my friend was plagued by strange events. I was summoned out of bed repeatedly following whispered phone calls asking me to search her home. A number of occurrences follow:

Frequently, in bed and alone, she saw shadows pass under her door as though someone were walking through the hallway, past her room.

Another instance she awoke in the night to the crinkling of a plastic bag. Thinking her cat was playing with the bag she called to it. The noise stopped. As she shifted her body she felt the cat, already sleeping at her side!

The most startling event occurred on a night as she prepared to leave home. On said evening, she had the gloves in hand, set them on her kitchen counter, and ran upstairs to fetch her purse. Moments later, returning to the kitchen every cabinet and drawer stoop gaping open.

If one pair of gloves is a nexus for an unknown ghost between this world and another perchance ten photographs, in the gloves' likeness, will become it's network. The first lucky bidder is sure to find out if the manifestations follow.

July 16, 1945 birthed the Atomic Age with the detonation of the first atomic bomb at the Trinity Site, near Alamogordo, New Mexico. The explosion, equivalent to around 20 kilotons of TNT, left a lake of green glass, 800 yards in diameter, on the desert floor. This glass, dubbed Trinitite, is typically light olive green in color and is remains measurably radioactive today. The majority of the trinitite was excavated and buried. Limited samples were circulated among mineral collectors. However, today it is a federal offense to remove remaining fragments from the Trinity site, which is open to the public two days a year. Contrary to estimations of some of the scientists involved, the blast did not result in the "ignition of the atmosphere and incineration of the entire planet" but produced this beautiful mineral instead. The specimen* from which this drawing was made was formed near the center of the blast. The bottom is rough reflecting the sandy desert surface. The top is lumpy, convoluted, with gas pockets, sand inclusions, and other irregular surfaces. Weighs 12.13 grams. Measures 1 7/8x1x5/8".

Washington silver quarters were minted 1932-1964 and contain 90% silver and 10% copper, unlike todays "Johnson sandwich," that is composed predominately of copper with 8.33% nickel. The 1940 Denver mint coin was not the rarest minted of the Washington silver quarters but it is among the most difficult to find in high grades. Circulated coin, very good condition.
